Postdoctoral Research Association Position Genome Segment Analysis in Corn
A 2-year postdoctoral in genetic and cytogenetic analysis of corn is available at Columbia, Missouri, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural 1 Research Service. This is an opportunity to advance knowledge of the integrated functioning of the genome, determining how particular factors and blocks of the genetic material influence the plant and its development through segment-dosage analysis. From previous work it is clear that development of the plant and of the kernel is not only highly systematic and modulated, but is subject to genetic constitution, either through the effects of variants of specific genes or through the effects of dosage changes of genes and genomic segments. The comprehensive definition of more specific genetic effects, especially among elite, corn-belt materials, will contribute to understanding of the plant in its developmental progression, its cell-biological properties, its growth and its production efficiency. The plan is to produce, by cytogenetic methods, plants and kernels carrying 1, 2 and 3 doses for specific chromosomes and chromosome segments, in elite inbred lines, by the use of B-A translocations and monosomy/trisomy. These constitutions will be established by the use for restriction-fragment probes and cytological analysis. Parameters of plant kernel growth and morphogenesis, and biochemical and cell-biological properties are to be studied. The research will participate in and will be a part of the national effort to derive integrated genome maps of corn that combine morphological factors, isozymes, cytogenetic alterations, RFLPs and quantitative trait loci, toward increased understanding and manipulation of the inheritance components and mechanisms of corn. A fundamental knowledge of genetics, cytogenetics, and molecular biology is required. Experience with plant genetics is desirable. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and should have received the Ph.D. within the preceding 3 years. Selection will be made no later than January 31, 1988, from among qualified applicants. Qualified applicants will be considered for appointment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, age, national origin, or any other nonmerit factor such as nondisqualifying physical handicap. Medals are awarded every three to five years. Barkley Named Head of Konza PrairieTheodore M. Barkley has been named coordinator for the Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, announced Terry Johnson, director of the division of biology at Kansas State University. Barkley's appointment begins in July. Barkley is curator of the KSU Herbarium and a professor of biology. He replaces Lloyd Hulbert who died last year. Hulbert was responsible for creation of the 8,616 acres of tall grass prairie, the largest reserve of its kind in the world, which serves as a natural laboratory to study plants, animals, soils and effects of burning, grazing, floods and droughts. Barkley's three main administrative duties will be to provide coordination of use of the site, maintain a long-term data base on research and maintain the site's integrity as a natural ecosystem. Other responsibilities will include developing financial support, increasing Konza Prairie visibility and a developing a grassland bibliographic center. Located in the Flint Hills 10 miles south of the K-State campus, the Konza Prairie was acquired for K-State in the early 1970s by the Nature Conservancy in Arlington, VA. The KSU Division of Biology operates the site through the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station and the College of Arts and Sciences. Concern Spreads Over Swamp Stone Crop in Britain--Will It Invade North American Next?Swamp stone crop, Crassula helmsii, a plant alien to Britain and Europe, has rapidly expanded its distribution over the last two decades. It is currently found in over 100 aquatic sites and is doubling the sites of its occurrence every 3-5 years. Concern is growing because 1 in 10 of these natural sites are nature reserves and both common and rare native species are rapidly outcompeted by its dense monospecific stands which often continue to dominate throughout the winter months. Its occurrence can easily be overlooked (compare e.g., Purple Loose-strife) as in swamps it resembles Sphagnum moss cover or in ponds, Starworts (Callitriche spp.). Attempts at control, particularly mechanical, have had only limited success because its potential for vegetative regrowth is very high--each minute node producing at least one and sometimes two new shoots; it has even outcompeted species of Elodea and Nuphar. Concern was greater when it was realized that it is less demanding in its habitat requirements and as such occupies a greater habitat range than previous invasions of alien plants e.g. Eurasian Milfoil. It has so far dominated wetland areas of several acres ranging from 0.7 m above water levels, particularly in shalllow seasonal ponds of acidic water, to depths of 3 m in lakes of calcareous water. Plant size varies from compact stands of 0.1 m to large submerged ones of 1.3 m. Biomass is always high, ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 kg dry weight m . It is currently confined to static waters but has been shown, experimentally, to grow in moderately fast flowing waters. The initial occurrences in Britain have been sporadic but may be related to its supply of aquaria and garden ponds as an 'oxygenator-plant', because of its vigorous growth and tolerance of varied growth conditions. It is similar in appearance to Crasula (Tillaea) aquatica already found in N. America but it can be distinguished because its flower stalks are relatively long (2-8 mm). Considering the high reproductive potential, rapid spread and the difficulty of control of this variety (?), it is recommended that extreme measures are used to prevent its invasion of North America.
