NSF Travel Awards for the International Botanical Congress

The National Science Foundation announces an award of $37,500 to the Botanical Society of America for travel of recognized U.S. scientists to the XIV International Congress in West Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany on July 24-August 1, 1987. Seventyfive awards of $500 each will be made. Eligibility: U.S. scientists, defined as any recognized member of the U.S. scientific community, irrespective of nationality, who performs work in the U.S. Constraints: travel must be by U.S. flag carrier wherever avail-able; no other NSF funds may be used to supplement an award. Deadline for applications: February 15, 1987. Announcement of awards: approximately March 31, 1987. Information and applications can be obtained from: Dr. Harry T. Horner, Department of Botany, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011, by enclosing a stamped and self-addressed business envelope. Selection criteria: special consideration is to be given to young scientists, since their financial resources are generally more limited than those of senior scientists; special consideration is to be given applications from women and ethnic minorities to ensure, insofar as possible, adequate representation of both proportional to the total number of applicants from the scientific community; special consideration is to be given to geographic location, to ensure fair distribution of awards to scientists throughout the U.S. Consideration is to be given to active scientists; i.e., those who are currently members of professional organizations and who are currently publishing their research; consideration is to be given to those who will take an active part in the IBC-87 by presenting an invited or contributed paper, chairing a session or symposium, or presenting a poster; consideration is to be given to those who have no other sources of funds for travel or other expenses connected with IBC-87. Conant and Endowment Fund Awards for the International Botanical Congress

The Botanical Society of America announces that approximately $10,000 from its Conant and Endowment Funds will be used for awards for travel of Society members to the XIV International Botanical Congress. Society members also may apply for funds from the NSF award to the Botanical Society. An application for BSA and NSF funds can be obtained from: Dr. Harry T. Fifth Wildland Shrub Symposium

The Shrub Research Consortium is sponsoring the Fifth Wildland Shrub Symposium June 30-July 2, 1987 at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. The symposium, "Shrub Ecophysiology and Biotechnology," will feature invited and contributed papers. Contributed presentations will be 20 minutes. The proceedings will be published by the USDA Forest Service Intermountain Research Station. Course: Tropical Flora of the Bahamas

The Department of Botany at Miami University will offer the course "Tropical Flora of the Bahamas" on Andros Island, Bahamas, from 15-31 May 1987. This will be the 10th year for the course. Topics covered include families of tropical plants, ecology, economic botany, and marine studies. Interested students should contact Dr. Thomas K. Wilson or Dr. W. Isotopic Analysis

Stable isotopes of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen at natural abundance levels are becoming increasingly useful tools in many biochemical, physiological, agronomic and ecological studies. However, access by biologists to the required instrumentation has been limited in the past. The Biology Department at the University of Utah has recently established a regional facility for stable isotopic analyses of H, C, N and O. Analyses in this facility are available to the academic community on a break-even cost basis (charges to cover labor/supply costs). Tropical Botany

For the Thirteenth year, Harvard University Summer School, in collaboration with Fairchild Tropical Garden, offers an intensive, in-residence graduate level course in tropical botany, "Plants of the Tropics," centered in Miami, Florida at Fairchild Tropical Garden. The course (4 weeks) will be given completely in Miami. Biology S-105 will provide 4 units and will be taught by P. B. Tomlinson of Harvard Forest. The course will extend from June 15-July 11, 1987. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Botanist

The Hope College Biology Department has a tenure track position for a botanist beginning August, 1987. Individuals qualified in any field of botany will be considered although persons specializing in plant physiology are particularly encouraged to apply. The appointment is expected to be at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will teach in the general introductory course for biology majors, an introductory biology course for non-majors and be expected to develop an upper level botany course. In addition she/he will be expected to seek extramural funding to support an active research program which involves undergraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral experience.

Hope College is a distinguished Christian co-educational, residential liberal arts college affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. Hope has maintained a strong tradition in science that involves both teaching and research. Applications from women and minority persons are encouraged.

Plant Physiologist

The Botany Department of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale invites applications for a tenure track position in Plant Physiology with a research speciality in plant metabolism and regulation (higher plants preferred). The appointment will be made at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in plant physiology and metabolism, and maintain an active research program with outside funding. The SIU-C Botany Department is composed of 16 faculty and offers degrees through the Ph.D. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree and postdoctoral experience is expected. Postdoctoral Position in Plant Chemistry/Ecology

Three year position available March 1987, to study the role of plant secondary chemistry in goldenrod resistance to herbivorous gallmaking insects in collaboration with evolutionary and physiological ecologists, and population geneticist. Research projects include a correlative study of secondary metabolites with plant resistance, isolation and identification of secondary compounds with potential resistance properties, and involvement in the development of bioassays for anti-oviposition agents or larval toxins. Experience with diterpenoid and phenol chemistry, extraction techniques, GC mass spec, and HPLC is highly desirable. Graduate Assistants in Plant/Microbial Ecology

Assistantships are available for M.S. and Ph.D. study of physiological plant ecology and microbial ecology in terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Possible research topics include plant/microbial interrelationships, nutrient dynamics, allelochemistry, use of microorganisms as biocontrol agents, discovery of medicinal and pesticidal natural products, dynamics and effects of pollutants on plant and microbial communities. Outstanding opportunities for field research are available at Fordham's Calder Ecology Center in Armonk, New York, including laboratory facilities, extensive woodlands, and a 10-acre pond. AWARDS

New England Botanical Club Award

Debra A. Dunlop was selected to receive the 1986 New England Botanical Club award in support of botanical research in New England for her proposal "Biosystematics of Carex section Scirpinae (Cyperaceae)." Ms. Dunlop, a Ph.D. candidate working with Dr. Garrett E. Crow at the University of New Hampshire, will use the award to travel to alpine areas of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and to lime-stone and serpentine sites in southeastern Canada to collect material for anatomical, cytologcial and micromorphological studies and for crossing experiments.

The New England Botanical Club will again offer an award of $1,000 in support of botanical research to be conducted in the New England region during 1978. This ward is made to stimulate and encourage botanical research on the New England flora and to make possible visits to the New England region by those who would not otherwise be able to do so. The award will be given to the graduate student submitting the best research proposal dealing with field studies in systematic botany and plant ecology, but proposals for research in other areas of botany will also be considered. This award is not limited to graduate students at New England institutions, nor to members of the New England Botanical Club. Papers based on this research must acknowledge the NEBC's support, and it is encouraged that they be submitted to Rhodora, the Club's journal, for possible publication - subject to standard review processes.

Applicants should submit a proposal of no more than three double spaced pages, a budget (the budget will not affect the amount of the award), and their curriculum vitae. Two letters, one from the student's major professor, in support of the proposed research are also required. Proposals and supporting letters should be sent before 28 February 1987 to: Awards Committee, the New England Botanical Club, 22 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138. The recipient of the award will be notified by 30 April 1987.

HONORS

Elbert L. Little, Jr., has received the Barrington Moore Memorial Award for 1976 from the Society of American Foresters, of which he is a fellow. This award, consisting of a plaque and an honorarium, is given annually for distinguished research in any branch of biological sciences that has resulted in substantial advances in forestry. For many years Dr. Little was the dendrologist, U.S. Forest Service. Presently, he is a research associate, Department of Botany, Smithsonian Institution.

Charles B. Beck of the University of Michigan recently spent two weeks in the People's Republic of China where he lectured on progymnosperms in the academia Sinica Institute of Botany, Beijing and the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Nanjing. While in China he was informed that he had been elected a Corresponding Member of the Chinese Botanical Society -- the first American accorded this honor.

IN MEMORIAM

Dr. David P. Bloch, 60, professor of botany, died at his home Oct. 23 after a long illness. A cell biologist, Dr. Bloch during his UT Austin career taught courses in freshman biology, develop-mental cell biology and the biology of cancer. One of his recent research studies was on the early evolution of the genetic coding mechanism. That research was the subject last year of an article in Science magazine and is included in a current British Broadcasting Corporation science documentary entitled "Origins." Some of Dr. Bloch's earlier research had been on gene function, cell division and cell aging.

Dr. Bloch joined the UT Austin faculty in 1961. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship for research in 1964-65 at the University of Geneva. In addition to his service on the UT Austin faculty, he had taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Connecticut, had done research at Columbia University and had been a consultant to the National Center for Toxicological Research.

FELLOWSHIPS

The Morton B. Ryerson Fellowship is established through funds contributed by the Chicago Community Trust. Applications are being solicited for fellowships-in-residence to begin any time in 1987.

Open to any student, with preference to graduate students, the fellowship awards a monthly stipend of $800, plus room, for any period from two to nine months. Fellows are granted full and private use of a comfortable four-room log cab with kitchen, spectacularly situated amidst floodplain, hardwood forest on the banks of the DesPlaines River in the Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, managed by the Lake County Illinois Forest Preserve District.

Fellows will be expected to conduct independent field research on any topic relating to ecology and/ or conservation in northern Illinois forests. Cooperation with a local interpretative nature center is encouraged, but the research project is paramount.

Applicants should send a two to three page proposal, a resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, and a proposed schedule of residency at the Ryerson Conservation Area. Venis, Michael. Hormone Binding Sites in Plants. Research Notes in the Biosciences. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., One Wiley Drive, Somerset, New Jersey 08873, 1986. vii + 191 p., illus. ISBN 0470-20643-8. Price: $39.95.

Research on hormone binding sites has lagged far behind comparable research in animal systems. How-ever, beginning with the pioneering work of Lembi et al. in 1971 and Hertel et al. in 1972, there has been steadily increasing research on the existence and potential physiological significance of binding sites for all of the five major classes of plant hormone, especially the auxins. The author provides more than a simple summary of progress in this area. He begins with a discussion of general principles underlying receptor research including a discussion of the criteria that binding sites must satisfy in order to qualify as true receptors with physiological significance vs. merely sites to which hormones bind. The author then discusses various methods for studying receptor sites both from the experimental standpoint and from the standpoint of data analysis. The chapter on methods is followed by a chapter on non-binding second messengers that may be released from membranes upon hormone binding to receptors in the membrane. This chapter also considers the limited research that has been done on model membrane system.

The rest of the book is devoted to specific discussion of research on binding sites for auxin transport inhibitors plus each of the major classes .f plant hormone. In each case the author provides a critical analysis of research results and compares results from different laboratories or different species. The last chapter provides a summary plus comments on future prospects for hormone binding research in plants.

The book provides a very thorough discussion of research in this rapidly growing area of plant physiology. The author does an admirable job of summarizing and comparing data from various sources and goes further in providing thoughtful criticism of past work as well as helpful insights into future research directions likely to be most important in advancing this research area. The book should be valuable to anyone teaching or doing research in this area.

Nominations for the Lawrence Memorial Award

The Award Committee of the Lawrence Memorial Fund invites nominations for the 1987 Lawrence Memorial Award. Honoring the memory of Dr. George H. M. Lawrence, founding Director of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Award ($1,000) is given annually to support travel for doctoral dissertation research in systematic botany or horticulture, or the history of the plant sciences, including literature and exploration.

Major professors are urged to nominate outstanding doctoral students who have achieved official candidacy for their degrees and will be conducting pertinent dissertation research that would benefit significantly from travel enabled by the Award. The Committee will not entertain direct applications. A student who wishes to be considered should arrange for nomination by his/her major professor; this may take the form of a letter which covers supporting materials prepared by the nominee.

Supporting materials should describe briefly but clearly the candidate's program of research and how it would be significantly enhanced by travel that the Award would support. Smithsonian Research Fellowships

The Smithsonian Institution announces its research fellowships for 1987-1988 in the fields of earth sciences and biological sciences.

Smithsonian Fellowships are awarded to support independent research in residence at the Smithsonian in association with the research staff and using the Institution's resources. Predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowship appointments for six to twelve months, senior postdoctoral fellowship appointments for three to twelve months, and graduate student appointments for ten weeks are awarded. Proposals for research in the following areas may be made:

Biological Sciences - Tropical biology, ecology, systematics, natural history, evolutionary biology, animal behavior and pathology, paleobiology, marine biology, environmental studies.

Earth Sciences - Sedimentology, palentary geology, mineralogy, petrology, meteroitics, volcanology, and paleobiology.

Applications are due January 15, 1987. Stipends supporting these awards are: $25,000 per year plus allowances for senior psotdoctoral fellows; $18,000 per year plus allowances for postdoctoral fellows; $11,000 per year plus allowances for predoctoral fellows; and $2,500 for graduate students for the ten-week tenure period. Pre-, post-, and senior postdoctoral stipends are prorated on a monthly basis for periods less than one year.
